Our Story

Surfing Mums is a not for profit volnteer organization with close to 40 groups Australia wide. Founded in 2008 by two mums in Bryon Bay, who after regularly meeting to take turns watching each other’s children and surfing, decided this partnership could benefit mums around the country. And Surfing Mums was born.

Groups are coordinated by one, sometimes two members, and meet up at locations with the best beach conditions on that given day.

Mums (and dads, grandparents and carers) pair up, decide who will surf/watch the kids first and then swap. Each partner has an hour of beach time.

The organization runs much deeper than simple surf swaps though and the connections made during our meets are magical. Likeminded people get together and friendships are formed between parents and kids alike. In fact many members describe Surfing Mums as LIFECHANGING

"I still remember how stoked I was after my first SM surf. I was kicking myself that I didn’t join earlier (Freddie was 3 and Minnie was 4 months). I realized how much surfing I had missed out on. It was amazing to be consistently back in the water. Now, 2 years on, I am even more stoked with the awesome water women I have met and become great friends with; we surf, we laugh, we picnic, we wine, we dine and most of all, we have fun! Thanks SM." There's a great range of surfing abilities across the Surfing Mums community, from complete biginners to big wave chasers, body boarders and SUPers. Some members prefer to run on the beach others swim in an ocean pool.  We are about inclusivity and fostering a love of the ocean, whatever that looks like to you.

There’s a group of legends down by the sea,

Full of good vibes with hearts so free,

They share the stoke day after day,

Whether the waves be big or it’s flat as a bay,

They have so much love to share so wide,

It pours in to your life like a big king tide,

Encouragement to get back on your board,

And big ‘yahoos’ for the waves you’ve scored,

In the water and on the land,

They’ll have your back and make life grand,

With sandy toes and salty skin,

These legends will always make you grin,

There’s no where else I’d rather be,

Than hanging with Surfing Mums for eternity.
